MGIP is back ! University of Manchester Careers Blog

MGIP is back ! University of Manchester Careers Blog The Manchester Graduate Internship Programme has now launched for our grads of 2013. Each year here at the Careers Service a team works to generate graduate level internship opportunities all around the Manchester area for the graduates of that year.   These opportunities span a whole range of subjects and roles; we’re pretty confident we have something for everyone. Why search for internships instead of permanent contracts I hear you ask? They give you the chance to learn about and experience a professional environment while also giving you the freedom to know that its temporary and that youll have the chance to discover what you like about the role and the industry before applying for permanent roles. As a current 2012 ‘MGIPer’ I work at the University here at the Careers Service in a Student Marketing role.   As it’s an intern position there are a lot of different tasks and people to get involved with and therefore a lot of scope to work on a larger variety of skills rather than training for one specific job.   Overall I think having a role with some freedom has helped me develop my problem solving and idea generating skills a lot more than if I had had a more rigid role. This is often the case with internships, there is the chance to experiment and try out new things which can really help you in discovering what you’re good at and what you do and don’t like doing. For me, I loved Manchester and I really didn’t want to leave after graduation. MGIP was the perfect avenue for me to find experience and be able to work in my university city. Don’t just take my word for it, here’s a blog post from a fellow 2012 MGIPer who took up a role within a small private company: So if you’re due to graduate this summer, want to stay in Manchester and work for an exciting small to medium-sized company (or the University), MGIP could be for you!
